Before I crossed in Washington (a new state!) I stopped in Portland for dinner with beautiful Nashima – who has emailed me the day before asking if I was passing through & had any talks planned. I replied ‘I’m passing through tomorrow – no talks, but I would love to drink tea with you’. We met at a packed & gorgeous Blossoming Lotus & shared a delicious meal. Portland is great. A really nice balance of size and culture (ie bookstores, music and food) & meeting Nashima was a wonderful treat.
Seattle. Wow! I didn’t make it to Tacoma to visit the school from ’10 Things I Hate About You’ (the only place on my geeky film junkie tourist map) because the visibility was zero (next time) – stunning water rich Washington feels like Germany or England in some places. Amazing the difference that crossing a man-made line on the earth (state line) has upon the landscape & mentality of the people. I visited Brian Lumb for some most excellent NSA & stayed in the House of the Sun = Paul & Poteet Douglas. Poteet was un-raw when first we met @ a Gate in Como – so cool to see her since her change in lifestyle. And to spend time with another Network/Raw peep – when our worlds collide wonderful things happen! I’ve been meaning to blog about their transformation for ages now. Paul has moved from hotel catering (he was chef for a porn conference in Phoenix the weekend I met Poteet!) to working as a raw chef – he is making really exciting foods with Adam @ House of The Sun. It’s the first time in ages I’ve been tickled pink, wowed & surprised by raw food. They are supplying Nature’s Pantry in Bellevue & their friends Tom & Susan @ Raw Vegan Source – USA’s largest dedicated raw supplies. Tom & Susan are extraordinary (I was lucky enough to film them) from Susan’s cancer recovery, to Tom’s biodynamic garden (see the Goji berries below – in just 5 months) & mountain climbing + a healthy passion for chocolate – we had much to discuss..
From Seattle to Bellingham, to stay with RSF Exec Chef Bruce ‘Spruce’ Horowitz & his son Jadyn. Bruce and Tom have collaborated in the planting of many things tasty, so the visits tied in nicely for me. Bruce lives in the kind of place I’ve dreamt of and seen in photos, but I’ve never known anyone who actually lives in such beauty, with incredible light, land, quiet & lots of cool farm animals. He also makes fairly fab food & perfect chocolate. Did I say perfect? I am one lucky duck.. ❤

Scientists believe that the human intestine still harbours scores of undiscovered organisms. Too bad that work on the gut lacks the glamour of research on the heart or the brain. In the past six decades, gut science has revealed the stomach and the rest of the digestive tract to be much more subtle and interesting than previously thought. For a start, the gut has a ‘brain’. Nerves and nerve pathways wrapped around it are sometimes referred to as the little brain in the gut.
“The nervous system of the gut has all the types of nerve cells that the brain has. It also has every type of chemical messenger found in the brain. In the case of one of them – serotonin, closely associated with depression – it has the greater part of the body’s entire store. The gut can make it’s own decisions. In fact it has to. Different foods require different responses: is this veg or fruit coming through? Its layers of muscle have to choose the appropriate program of complex co-ordinated movement: mix the gut contents; move them on; do both at once. I’ve just spent my 3rd weekend in a row away from home – I’m planning to stay in my tub awhile now! For the last 3 days I absorbed the words of Chris Howard 9am-10.30pm – which was a big first for me. Did I break through? Time will tell. I loved the music & stadium anthem vibe. Though 2444 other people (not on juice) was alot & I hit the saturation wall a couple of hours before the end. I was lucky to spend this time with Catherine – great to have each other as feedback throughout the program. Both of us are happily grateful for where we’re at in our lives & it was SO clear to me how much change my NSA care has created already. Having said that, I go through periods of not trusting/believing (Gina!) in it & wonder what’s next for me. Cue Ralph & Holotropic Breathwork – maybe? Today I was recognised from HFJ for the 1st time (that deserved a little dance) – Karmen Gui if you’re reading this, please get in touch.
I’ve been tagged – Franky G wants to know 5 things about me: 1| My parents are not hippies – I’m named after my Irish 4’11” Maternal Grandmother (who is with me at all times). 2| I think bic biros are wrong. Deeply wrongly wrong. I’m a believer in gorgeous pens & paper & ink. 3| I think Eric Stoltz as Keith, in Some Kind Of Wonderful is the most beautiful man who ever lived (Sundays are my Day of Worship = Movies). 4| @ 3 yrs old I fell backwards down a 6ft drop & landed on my head – they never figured out the extent of the damage. 5| My first love (and twin) was Oliver Reed as Bill Sikes in Oliver (yes I know, deeply twisted) who also happens to be the first man I ever saw naked in Women In Love – my parents accidently left the room during the firelit wrestling scene – George & I are forever grateful.
I have pretty much worked my way through the list of ‘raw friendly’ NYC from We Like It Raw. My faves: 1 @ the top of the list for super-nutrient-rich food, flavour & lovely people (+ price – $6 for a tea!..) comes Jubbs Longevity (David records a TV show on Tuesday & Thursday evenings – with a free talk & spontaneously invented snacks). 2: Fave for ambience, the best chilli green juice (witness Gina below – seeing her here has been almost as healing as the Gate) & humous is Quintessence. Top for outside seating + gourmet 5* dining & extra-ordinary Tiramisu is Pure Food & Wine (below, my 1st husband Azha – one of my favourite people on the planet, who also has an exceptionally fine palette, so dining with him is a double joy – eating Pure seaweed + Florence sipping Pure wine). Caravan of Dreams still has a great vibe, but the service is sketchy & after being spoiled at Jubbs, the food lacked any wow factor. Yaffa Cafe still has the best Avocado Salad & you get to hang out with ‘normal people’, which can be nice sometimes… + I made it up to Harlem to Raw Soul for another wonderful Green Juice & coconut water (+ Ms Lilian supplies raw pies to several shops). Waverley Natural Market, Integral Yoga, Life Thyme & Health Nuts are great for Raw snacks & supplies. Juice Generation + Live-Live saved my life – John of the latter, was veeery patient with our chocolate questions! (I was disappointed with the range in Whole Foods, but having seen their new store on Bowery, I now know what delights lie in store for us on Kensington High Street). Vast appreciation goes to UliMana for their truffles – the only chocolate I found which compared with the good stuff back home.. It’s SO much easier to be healthy here – there are many juice bars, street fruit stands, salad bars in delis & decent salads + green tea on most menus. Not only that, but they have benches on many streets which make the quality of life more community friendly, and somehow all UPS staff are still really cute, which must make receiving deliveries so much more fun :)
It was wryly pointed out to me today that one person I actually listen to is Fiona, ‘Then it’s just as well that she is kitted out with a zapper, a water ionizer & some barley grass now’, I replied.. She has told me not to have people staying with me for any length of time any more (she’s not the 1st) – I have a disposition/CNS that needs solitude & time to potter & regenerate, it would seem. Within an hour of being alone this morning, the mental constipation/frozen brain fog/cerebral ennui ceased & the creative floodgates opened with gusto – focus, clarity & sass were mine again. Funny how that works. Blogs often pop up like speech bubbles, then weave themselves over hours or days, piece by thread. So until I have a 3 bedroom house with a study, sound proofing & a self-cleaning kitchen, there’s a nice little B+B round the corner…
I’m into week 3 of Zapping (the poor thing has been dropped many times) & I’ve been taking Parasite Herbs sent by my friend Matt @ The Raw World (I’m a big fan of Healthforce products), as well as Waiora’s NCD Zeolite. I’ve been waiting to try it for ages now – I got the Zeolite from Matt too (along with some Raweo Cookies, yumm..) or you can get it in UK from Energy for Health + Synergy-Health (they also sell Kefir starter kits + frozen Acai). I found an article on the subject by Gabriel Cousens; Amy brought me some more ChlorOxygen over from the USofA too – so easy & so green! The thing about health stores here in the UK, is that generally the people who run them or do the ordering are watching cash flow & not living high-vibe super-food lives of excited experimentation – this means we need to go out of our way to track down cutting edge information & products. So, eventually I gave in & subscribed to The Best Day Ever, because they really are at the forefront of research. Ignore the odd dodgy hair-do & hemp mu-mu – let the info speak for itself. There is a great new list of hotspots in New York (an eating trip is long overdue..) from We Like It Raw.
I’m working on a final chocolate recipe for selling to folks (other than the ones who pop up, hungry on Sunday mornings in my kitchen), as well as designing packaging etc; great news – Richard has launched The Raw Chocolate Shop – all your fave bars are now in one place! Now all that’s missing is to arrange some TransAtlantic choc-tasting swaps.. My 1st raw choc experience was in 2001 when I ordered a whole, fresh, rugby sized cacao pod from Orkos. I covered the kitchen in sticky cacao pulp & flying beans, then ground them into a paste, mixed with other goodies = gorgeous! I thought I might be onto something – though the prohibitive cost at that time & the goop on the ceiling deterred me for a few years. It was only when fab tasting raw choc arrived that living raw become a reality for me! Happy B’Day Mel x

Tomorrow is a full moon in Leo, & the Chinese Year of the Pig/Boar begins on the 18th Feb – signifying abundance; Kris says, that this means asking for, allowing it to manifest, then receiving gracefully – for a whole 365 days! Ah, can the best year ever thus far really get better?
Jont the magical music maker, asked me yesterday how best to gracefully navigate life from flesh to plant, so this is what I’ve come up with for y’all. Depending on appetite (quantity), taste buds (preferences) and schedule – all of which can, and most likely will change @ a moments notice, ie. realising you don’t need toast & peanut butter for breakfast if you have your green juice; finding yourself craving salad over pizza; & after figuring out where in town you can get easy healthy snacks (pubs I’m clueless about, but an A-Z of health stores in London I should make), or how to live without a microwave at work, these are the basics – after drinking lots of Pure water & cutting out completely all refined sugar, processed grains + homogenized pasteurized dairy products:
JUICE: the single most effective thing you can do. Greens – celery, fennel, cucumber (as a base) + chives, mint, corriander, cavalo nero, red pepper, kale, parsley, romaine, spinach, ginger. Yes, other vegetables too, but it’s the greens that really rock. Start including small amounts of pear & carrots if the veggies alone are too intense, then cut back on the sugars slowly.
Chlorophyll: wheatgrass, barley grass, spirulina, blue green algae, kelp, seaweed, alfalfa juice, chlorella – take daily.
Superfoods: fresh Kiki bee pollen, raw cacao, fresh frozen Açai, fresh leaf aloe vera (your local market will probably have some, or African shop), camu camu, guarana, maté, goji berries, angstrom minerals, medicinal mushrooms, hemp seed, mesquite, maca, manuka honey, purple corn & yacon root (see Raw Foods suppliers under Links) – have daily in chocolate, trail mixes, salads & smoothies.
Smoothies: all the above can be used in smoothies, along with greens (yes more!), fruit, vegetable juices.. Cacao Smoothies can contain your entire cupboard, or be really simple – nut/seed/coconut milk + cacao nibs (ground), cacao powder, goji (ground or soaked), maca, algae, mesquite, agave/manuka/zylitol, a pinch of cayenne + celtic sea salt (these final two are mandatory). To make Green Smoothies – put some of the juice into a blender & then add fresh red chilli, chives, spirulina, fresh aloe, hemp oil – cayenne + salt.. Add the remainder of the juice & mix together. These smoothies are meals – not a ‘drink’. Watch DavidWolfe make a smoothie – that should cover it..
Good Fats: raw coconut butter, raw cacao butter, avocados, olives, cold pressed organic oils, raw nuts & seeds: hemp, flax, pumpkin, sesame, sunflower, brazil, pecan, walnut, macadamia, almond etc.
Salads + Soups: fresh raw garlicky, oily, lemony, basily, seaweedy, tomatoey, spicy, tangy & tasty.
All the goodies/nutrients/lifeforce you need you can find in the above foods. I don’t count calories, micrograms of minerals or protein – the superfoods contain all we need. Keep it simple & you will soar. Cleansing always helps transitioning of course, + food combining, fasting, colonics etc.. If in doubt, avoid: food in packets; tins; from microwaves; bleached/white foods; sugar, flour, salt, cow milk, soya milk/tofu, coffee; saturated fats; the Pill, laxatives, rennies; mercury fillings; alcohol; vaccinations & tripe. It smells.

Why did we choose a date so far away? Ah, so that everyone has time to practice first. Catherine & I are hosting a Raw Chocolate Potluck (the 1st of many methinks) at mine, in Battersea – let me know if you want to come. All attendees must bring offerings of cacao delights. There is a blog further down with info about suppliers & there are plenty of free recipes online to set you off in the right direction.
